Much has been written about the detox diet (detoxification) over the decades. It seems the past ten years, roughly, have seen an explosion of these diets. The basic principle is the same across all of them, and that is to use foods (or liquids) to help your body get rid of toxins. First, we must caution you and suggest you talk to your doctor before embarking on any kind of detox diet. Many people turn to this overall approach when they want to lose weight. While it is possible to achieve that, we feel the loss will be temporary for a variety of reasons. We will talk more about the detox diet in the rest of this article.

There are two basic approaches with many types of detox diets. First, the diet calls for avoiding foods that are known to introduce toxins in your body. Naturally, that is probably something every person should do, anyway. Secondly, the particular diet will recommend you eat foods, or drink liquids, that support the body's ability to process and eliminate toxins. There is a fairly large variety of detox diets, and frequently they also require that your intake of calories is reduced, as well. You will find some that have you eat much smaller portions or even go on liquid fasting such as with juices, only.

When properly used, the detox diet can be very beneficial, but it can also be dangerous if you have particular medical conditions. There can be problems if you have diabetes, heart disease, or other chronic problems. The detox diet is a highly restrictive one, which is the main complaint of most doctors. Even though it's usually for a short period of time, the detox entails a very restrictive diet. There are warnings of possible negative side effects for teenagers and younger children.

One particular detox diet is known as the Master Cleanse. Another common name for this one is the lemonade diet. This method is more like a fast in which only lemonade with maple syrup and cayenne pepper is consumed. As you can clearly see, this seems pretty hardcore and is not for everyone. One well known entertainer was in the news because she lost weight while on the lemonade diet. However, she later reported that she gained the weight back after coming off of it. But keep in mind this is a detox diet and not a lose weight diet. Also, doctors have warned that women in certain situations should not use this approach. So - see your doctor if this diet appeals to you and be safe, always.

It's doubtful that it would be easy to find any adult who wouldn't benefit by a detox diet, even for a short period of time. It would be advantageous, especially for those living in countries that rely heavily on packaged and processed foods for the main part of their diet, to partake in a detox diet from time to time. Nonetheless, the very people that would benefit the most by a good detox diet are those who disdain any alternative approaches to health and, as a result, they don't even consider something as healthful as a detox diet.
