Dieting can be a slow process. At times it can be so slow that it almost seems as if there is no progress made at all. So it is no surprise that diet supplements are used by many American adults to help give their weight loss a boost. There's an entire weight loss sub-industry devoted to supplements which stops fat absorption, increase metabolism, and decrease appetite.

While it is true that most weight loss experts will not recommend most of the products that are sold as weight loss supplement, there are some which do seem to work. There are six products which can be bought at drug stores or health food stores and which have scientific evidence behind them that they help with weight loss:

He did have a number of recommendations and I'm going to share them here, in case there is still a female in this country that has not tuned into Dr. Oz's show on a daily basis. He pointed out that after age 50 the body burns 200 calories a day less because of estrogen loss. As you age and your eggs "shrivel," your body turns to your belly fat as a backup for storage of its estrogen. That being the case, you need to provide your body with an alternative source of estrogen. Dr. Oz recommends you grind up and eat two teaspoons of flax seeds daily to boost your estrogen.

* Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) - this is a fatty acid which occurs naturally in red meat and dairy products. As a diet supplement it seems to work, but it also may have side effects which can be a concern. CLA may raise cholesterol levels and adversely impact liver tests. Before an individual takes a CLA supplement, they should discuss it with their doctor.

Be more careful with the portions you eat. If you tend to overeat, put less food on your plate and try eating slowly. Avoid distractions so you can stop as soon as you are full. If you always feel the need to snack between meals, try having several smaller meals during your day. Have five small meals at regular hours or even six.

Be active for at least thirty minutes a day. Going for a walk is a great way to burn calories after eating. If you cannot go for a walk, find an activity you can do to get some light exercise. You could for instance clean your house, play in the backyard with your children or work on a home improvement project.

There's no denying it is going to require a little more of a concentrated effort to be successful in the weight loss department after the age of forty. It's a hard reality, but weight loss CAN be accomplished if you follow these guidelines. Even more importantly, you will be increasing your overall health which means you will feel strong, healthy and vital - and isn't that the ultimate goal in any diet regimen?

* Over-the-Counter Orlistat - this is technically a medicine, but since it doesn't need a prescription, it is considered a supplement. It is sold under the brand name Alli and is proven to work. This supplement blocks 25% of all fat calories which are eaten from being absorbed. Those who take Orlistat and who also follow a sensible eating and exercise plan will lose weight. Orlistat does have some inconvenient side effects including gas and anal leakage.
