Those who have witnessed barrel races could not help but admire the skills of competitors. One could not help but wonder how such events originated. What is more surprising is that the competitors are mostly women. Knowing how it developed will help one admire more such sports.

Nobody could really trace how this sport originally started. However, one thing is known, that its roots started around 1930s. During that time, women would like to join horsemanship competitions to show that they too have skills that could match that of men. However, horsemanship sports, which are mostly rodeo shows, were dominated by men. Women made their own horse events by having horses run in circular patterns around barrels. Legend says that it was in Texas where this originated.

Throughout the second World War, women rodeo events were increasing in popularity. However, it became overshadowed when men dominated again in this sports such as roping and bronc riding. It is commonly believed that the pattern of cloverleaf emerged on 1935. However, there was another judging criteria. It was only around 1949 when Girl Rodeo Association was formed making the rules. This was renamed during 1981 and is known as Women Professional Rodeo Association now.

This event could be organized focusing on it only or as a part of a rodeo or horse show. It has become highly competitive as it involves horses with extreme athletic ability and a rider with unparalleled horsemanship skills. They compete for the fastest record maneuvering in clover leaf patterns around barrels arranged triangularly inside arenas.

One run usually lasts as little as fifteen seconds in most professional competitions this days. The fastest ever recorded was 13.52 seconds by a racer named Brandie Halls during 2006. The rules to the race is not too complicated. One would only need to follow the pattern. Breaking it will result to disqualification. Should one tip an obstacle, a five second penalty will be given. Sometimes no time penalty is given.

Competition is so tough and standards are too high that an experienced rider have to get the best horse possible. In the past, the horses being used were only rejects who could not perform well in racing, cutting, or reigning. However, horses are now bred just for this type of event. These breeds possess the speed and ability to keep their bodies in control so that precise, quick turns are handled well.

Over the years, it has evolved into an event that is solely for women only. However, there are some groups which allow men to compete. There are clubs and associations which offer youth training in this discipline. However, its increasing popularity have made it into a sport that is well suited for families, not just for women anymore. It is now common to see men in these events.

So much progress can be seen in this sports. Its humble beginnings do not show any hints that it will become what it is now. Unlike its former years where it is only a pastime for women, this has grown into a serious sport industry. More men are joining and training for it. Serious players breed special horses just for such events. One can fully see the progress of this sport.

Barrel races, as a form of entertainment, is sure to capture the attention of horse race fans. No matter its simplicity, this sport shows seriousness of skills which requires extreme preparations and selection of only the best horses. Those witnessing it are sure to fulfill their expectations.
