Over the years, a skin-care technique named microdermabrasion has grown in popularity. It is an economical solution that is noninvasive and does not cause pain for the recipient. For people who don't wish to have more serious plastic surgery, or injections and laser options, this is a choice that makes sense.

There is a lot that microdermabrasion can do, including lessening the appearance of age spots (hyperpigmentation), reduce scars, even out rough skin, make pores smaller, and lessen wrinkles and lines on the face. After the process is completed, skin will be able to allow creams to go deeper to have more of an effect to make skin look younger, by promoting the creation of collagen.

Skin is exfoliated using specially designed equipment for the microdermabrasion process. This will result in the removal of dead skin cells that have accumulated on the top layer of the skin.

The crystal microdermabrasion device consists of a compressor that draws in air through a hand-held wand. When the wand touches the skin, a vacuum is created. Dead skin cells are removed from the top layers of the skin as they collide with the aluminum oxide crystals. The crystals and dead skin cells are quickly sucked up through a different tube in the same wand.

Microdermabrasion is also done using a diamond-tip, no crystals are involved with this method, but vacuum technology is still applied. The dead skin cells are removed buy the diamond tip in this technique, and then vacuumed up the same way. Different kinds of tips are selected based on the type of skin the patient has, and how uneven the texture is. The discomfort is slightly increased for a patient using diamond-tips, however, crystal microdermabrasion has the same effect. For sensitive skin, this is the more beneficial option.

The skill of the treatment provider can improve upon the already significant effects of microdermabrasion. Multiple treatments are usually suggested in order to get the most from this technique, skin texture and type will determine how many are needed. After the first treatment is completed, a clearer picture of the overall treatment process will be planned out, and implemented, depending on skin condition among other factors. Patients in many cases are delighted after they see the effects that the first session brings, but for a comprehensive treatment for all skin concerns, more visits are usually necessary. In most cases, every several months a patient should have another session in order to have the effects be ongoing. An expert treatment provider will know how to set up the equipment in the proper way, according to the skin type, so that patients with overly sensitive skin can also take advantage of this technique.

Although microdermabrasion is an extremely popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment, it is not completely free from side effects. Some skin trauma does occur at times since it blasts crystals at the skin at a high rate of speed, this does have a reaction but it's not long lasting. There could be some slight bruising, skin sensitivity and skin tightness or redness. It goes away within hours, and is expected. Mild abrasions sometimes occur, and at times even a bit of bleeding. Risks are very small from microdermabrasion, the materials used are not harmful at all, and there is practically no risk that is associated with these procedures. This process is considered to be very safe, especially when you compare it to chemical agents or laser processes.
